Hospice of the Sierra
Hospice of the Sierra treats the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of dying patients in their homes or homelike settings. Hospice focuses on helping patients make the most of the time they have by relieving pain, making them as comfortable as possible, and involving family members as an important part of the mission.
A hospice patient receives care from a team of professionals including doctors, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, therapists, clergy and volunteers. Services include physical, emotional and spiritual support and comfort for patients, caregivers and families.
When is the right time to consider hospice care?
Anytime after learning they have a life-limiting illness, patients should consider all of their options, including hospice. They should feel free at any time to bring up the subject with their physician, other health care professionals, friends or clergy.
How does hospice pain management affect the patient?
A hospice goal is to keep the patient as comfortable and alert as possible. Hospice nurses accomplish this by consulting with the patient, their physician and caregiver, and by staying up to date on the patient’s current medications. Hospice medical social workers and clergy members offer help with emotional and spiritual support, and hospice aides assist patients with personal care.
Do Medicare and insurance plans cover hospice?
Medicare and Medi-Cal are hospice providers. Most insurance plans also provide coverage. During the initial evaluation, hospice staff with find out right away the patient’s eligibility and percentage of coverage. Other assistance is available.
Does Hospice try to make death come sooner?
Hospice staff do not do anything to speed or slow the dying process. They are there to support the patient and family during the dying process with their presence and their specialized knowledge.
After entering Hospice, can a patient who shows signs of recovery be returned to regular treatment?
Yes. In such a case, the patient can be discharged from hospice care.
