Sonora Regional Cancer Center Welcomes New Medical Oncologist
Catherine Jones, MD, has joined Sonora Regional Cancer Center as one of the lead oncologists. She joins Medical Oncologist Robert D’Acquisto, MD, and Radiation Oncologist Mihoko Fujita, MD. Dr. Jones has most recently practiced in Merced, Calif., at Mercy Cancer Center, an affiliate of UC Davis Cancer Network, where she treated a wide variety of rare and common malignancies.
Dr. Jones received her medical degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. She completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., followed by clinical fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
While completing her fellowship, Dr. Jones also completed a master’s degree program, earning a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Jones served as assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami in Miami, Fla., and in 2009 started private practice at the Mercy Cancer Center.
Dr. Jones has always had an interest in science. Her grandmother, who already had two sons practicing medicine, encouraged Jones to also pursue medicine. During her residency she found the most interest in treating conditions that related to her training in pathology, which lead her to oncology.
For her master’s degree, Dr. Jones focused on Phase I drug development and breast cancer treatment. She also researched disparities in health care and hopes to lessen the disparity gap in cancer care. In her practice, she finds joy in taking care of impoverished patients, providing each patient with the best care possible.
Dr. Jones has moved to Sonora and enjoys spending time with her 13-year-old son, playing adventure games, visiting amusement parks, and simply watching him grow and develop.
