Medical Center Welcomes New Orthopedic Surgeon

Sonora Regional Medical Center welcomes orthopedic surgeon James Ivy Boyd III, MD, who has joined Ariana DeMers, DO, and Thomas McDonald, MD, at Sierra Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Boyd is board certified and specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Boyd grew up in Napa Valley and attended Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif., earning a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He earned his medical degree and completed his orthopedic residency at Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Following his residency, Dr. Boyd served four years in the United States Navy, practicing general orthopedics at the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital in Twentynine Palms, Calif. During his service, Dr. Boyd treated many orthopedic conditions of the shoulders, knees and ankles, as well as orthopedic trauma. He participated in some of the care of wounded Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. “The motivation of Marines to return to their units in combat after an injury is truly inspiring,” says Dr. Boyd.
After completing his service with the Navy, Dr. Boyd completed a one-year sports medicine fellowship with Scripps Health in San Diego. While working in San Diego, he treated many recreational athletes and several professional athletes with the Padres and Chargers. “When people come to see us, it’s because they aren’t able to participate in the activities they enjoy,” says Dr. Boyd. “The most rewarding part of my work is getting people back to the activities they love.”
During college, Dr. Boyd spent three weeks in Kenya helping to build a church and a medical clinic, which cemented his decision to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Boyd also spent four weeks in Nepal during medical school on an Orthopedic rotation, where he learned that even the most basic orthopedic care can be tremendously helpful.
Dr. Boyd has relocated to Sonora with his wife, Devanie Teel, MD, a pediatrician, and their three boys. They are looking forward to raising their family in a community that enjoys the outdoors.
