Board-Certified General and Colorectal Surgeon Joining Sierra Surgical Associates

Sonora Regional Medical Center is expanding access to general surgery services with the recruitment of Sheila Hodgson, MD, who is board certified both in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Hodgson will be joining Lawrence Mier, MD, and Kimberlee Reed, MD, at Sierra Surgical Associates, complimenting their current services with her special interest in minimally-invasive, laparoscopic procedures to treat colorectal conditions including colon and rectal cancers.
Dr. Hodgson brings a wealth of education and experience to Sonora. She graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed an internship in general surgery at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colo. She served as a General Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon for the United States Army for four years.
Dr. Hodgson spent two years deployed overseas at army bases in Korea and Egypt where she provided trauma and primary care for troops and their dependents. She also served three months in Iraq. Policy at the base in Iraq allowed for any child under the age of 16 to be seen by the medical team and Dr. Hodgson treated many Iraqi children for burns and other injuries and illnesses.
Following active duty, Dr. Hodgson pursued further training with a general surgery residency at Martin Luther King Jr./Charles R. Drew Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., and fellowship in surgical critical care at UCSF-Fresno. She also completed residency in general surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, N.Y. In 2006, Dr. Hodgson performed over 150 colorectal surgeries, 250 colonoscopies, and 150 anal cases during her fellowship in colorectal surgery at the University of Southern California.
For the last five years, Dr. Hodgson has worked at Kaiser Permanente in Modesto, Calif., performing surgeries including a variety of laparoscopic colorectal procedures as well as general surgery procedures of the breast, gallbladder and hernias. In addition, Dr. Hodgson is enlisted with the Army Reserve and recently returned from a tour in Morocco. She joins Sierra Surgical Associates beginning June 14, 2011.
